Biomass Pellets Processing

Detik Aturan’s main business concept is to alleviate the current biomass residue problems by introducing waste to wealth concept; which is to trade energy stored in a compressed biomass solid fuel in the form of pellets.

It is a known fact that previous efforts to utilize agriculture waste as fuel source is hampered by high logistics and transportation cost. By its nature which is geographically dispersed, low in weight per volume ratio and distantly detached from its potential users, the economics of utilizing biomass fuel was not realistic.

With Detik Aturan’s innovation, formulation and close association with potential users, the barrier that existed previously in preventing the use of biomass residue biomass fuel can be overcome. It is now economically a very attractive business proposition.

Detik Aturan’s formulated solid biomass fuel ensures that the energy value stored is high, consistent and does not degrade over a certain period of time. This is the basis for our quality check and quality assurance to the market.

The company targets to produce the energy at the cheapest possible cost from biomass residue. Given that this waste is available all over Malaysia, it is important that the production process is conducted on site where the waste is located within concentrated areas to minimize logistics issue and transportation cost.

Our pilot plant will be located in Tanjung Karang, Selangor. The plant will have the capacity to produce 2,500 MT of compressed biomass per month.

EFB Pellets/ Fiber Project

EMPTY FRUIT BUNCHES (EFB) is a residue arising from the stripping of oil palm fruits in the extraction of oil palm at the mill. It has about 30% solid content of which about 2/3 are fibrous and the remaining 1/3 are soft parenchyma tissues which cemented the fiber together. Extensive research by many researchers at various local institutions such as MPOB, UKM, USM, MINT, SIRIM, UPM amongst others have generated a greater understanding and deeper appreciation of the fiber, its properties and potential usage.

The conclusion derived is that EFB can be an alternative source of fiber for the various industries including Pulp and Paper. With the rising concerns over the detrimental effects due to deforestation, tree-based fiber sources are becoming a scares commodity and its derivative products are being labeled as non-environmental friendly. EFB fiber which are renewable and its processing does not have an adverse effects on the environment, is becoming an attractive source of fiber.

Detik Aturan is leveraging on this point to drive the EFB fiber and its derivative products towards global recognition.

  • The Raw Material Supply

EFB is abundant in Malaysia. In 2003, the Palm Oil Processing Mills in Malaysia generated 14 million MT of EFB as residues. Given its abundance, there is a growing interest in utilizing the EFB for various other uses namely biomass energy generation and composting.

Given the current interest in renewable energy, about 22 Biomass Power plants have either being built or planned with a capacity of 200 MW. Assuming all the plants will utilise EFB as their energy input, about 6.8 million MT will be utilised per year for power generation. Out of the remaining 7.2 million MT of EFB, another 3 million MT can be allocated for Compost and other uses. The remaining 4.2 million MT can be utilized to potentially generates 580 thousands MT of cottonised fiber which can be the raw material to produce about 29 billion pieces of biodegradable moulded products.

As a start, Detik Aturan is searching for an ideal location that can provide a sustainable supply of about 200-250 MT of EFB per day. This capacity will produce about 15-20 MT of cottonised fiber which is more than the daily requirement of our associate moulding plant in Pandamaran.

  • The Technology and Process Flow

Processing of EFB into fibers involves the basic process of size reducing the bunch, followed by removing the oil and water from the resultant smaller lumps. Normally during the process, about 50% wt of the moisture in the EFB is removed.

Therefore the plant will require a waste treatment facility capable of treating all the waste water from the process. The oil recoverable from the processing of EFB is equivalent to 0.2 to 1.5% of the Oil Extraction Rate on FFB.

The plant will consist of EFB High Speed Shredder followed by Oil Extractor and 1 units of EFB Hammer Mill Shredder which are installed in series. The EFB is then fed into the Siever to separate the long from the short fibers. As a result, the short fiber will be sent into composting area for the composting process and the long fiber will undergo the drying process before ending up at baling and packaging.


  • Biomass Pellets Processing Facility

A pilot project to be located in Tanjung Karang in Malaysia's state of Selangor, this facility is designed to churn 2,500 metric tonnes of compressed biomass per month.
